Game Report

Sheffield Steelers 1-2 Edinburgh Capitals

Sheffield missing Ashley Tait but Jason Hewitt returns for his first game since late Feb. Capitals missing Dino Bauba

Edinburgh grab the last qualifying spot for the play-offs as Colin Hemingway hit a brace and JF Perras saved Jeff Legue's penalty shot.

Capitals were the livelier side throughout the scoreless opening period and Jody Lehman did well to keep his side on level terms.

Eventually Hemingway opened the scoring, cutting in from the left and netting high (23:57) from 15 feet.

Four minutes later Perras blanked Warren Tait and Jonathan Phillips close-in and in the ensuing scramble Neil Hay was adjudged to push the net off. Legue took the shot, deking left but Perras padded away the low shot. Rod Sarich levelled the game (33:37) from low on the right.

Neither side looked likely to beat the keepers until Hemingway rang the piepwork from the left wing. Seconds later Ryan Finnerty took a tripping penalty. Capitals couldn't test Lehman but Sarich took a roughing penalty after Doug Christiansen fell on Sarich's stick and wouldn't release it giving the visitors 57 seconds of 5-on-3.

They immediately called a timeout and although Jody Lehman made saves from Patrik Luza and Ryan Crane, that man Hemingway netted high from the left wing (54:36).

Steelers produced a late rally and lifted Lehman with 45 seconds remaining, but all the huff and puff was too little too late.
